How to Craft your Yachting Career

In this week’s Nautic Nomad yachting podcast, my friend Chief Stew Alex joins me to discuss how to craft a yachting career. As they say, fail to plan, plan to fail. From the perspective of those who are on the hiring side of things, this weeks episode is an inside look at what can help you stand out and plot a course for your goals. This topic is one I am super passionate about and admittedly one I wish I would have given more attention to in the past. Whether you are a career yachtie, just getting started, or thinking about joining the industry, I hope you enjoy our banter, stories, and lessons we have learned along the way.

VPDSD – Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties.

Here are the details on the VPDSD:

  1. PSA stands for Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW code VI/6.1) is the lowest ticket you can get for security. It’s not sufficient for crew who will be involved in watches which is why we always encourage crew, even junior ones, to jump to VPDSD (in the long run they save money that way)

  2. VPDSD stands for Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (STCW code VI/6.2) *sometimes abbreviated at PDSD (as in Personnel with Designated Security Duties)

  3. VSO stands for Vessel Security Officer (STCW code VI/5) *this is the equivalent of the more known, SSO which stands for Ship’s Security Officer)

This one is accredited if you wish to take it online:

A great CV can help you land that dream job interview where you have the opportunity to prove why you are the right person for the job. Check out this Yachting Resume Toolkit and gain the edge!
